New study shows no correlation between divorce and cohabitation

A new study recently published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that there is no real correlation between divorce and couples living together before getting married. Despite conventional wisdom, the study found that it is the age at which people get married that affects divorce rates, not cohabitation.

The study, which was conducted by Arielle Kuperberg, an associate professor from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, took data from thousands of women in the U.S. who were married during the years 1995, 2002, and 2006 Р2010.

According to Kuperberg, “For decades research has shown that cohabitation leads to divorce, and for the first time we can definitively say that cohabitation doesn’t lead to divorce and never did — that those earlier findings were a result of an incorrect measurement.”

The reasons that a couple decides to get divorced are unique and personal. Regardless of why you are choosing to file for divorce in San Diego, our lawyers at Fischer & Van Thiel, LLP, can help. Call us at 760-722-7646 to get the guidance and support you need during this time.
